How a staircase renovation runs
A refresh happens in stages, and each one matters for how the finish holds up.
- Strip back and inspect. The old covering comes up first, so any squeaks, loose treads or movement in the stringer are found and fixed before the new finish goes on.
- Prep and board. Risers and treads are boarded to make a flat, consistent base, which is what stops the finish showing every dip and gap in the original stairs.
- Choose the finish. New carpet, wallpapered risers with painted treads or a runner, and painted spindles and newel posts are all options.
- Finish and snag. Trims, edging and paintwork go in last, followed by a check over every step.
